learning about the solar system

On Wednesday, the girls and I walked to the library to find some books.  Marley has been asking about bees lately and I wanted to get her some books that explained how bees lived and made honey.  Well, once we got there are found the bee and insect section, we went a little crazy.  Behind us were books about animals, to the left were books about the solar system, and we couldn't stop choosing books to learn from!  So, we ended up with books about bees, caterpillars, planets, an insect-lo-pedia, and an animal encyclopedia and Marley was beyond excited.

We have been glued to them every time we have a second to read something together and I wanted to take what we were learning about into craft time.  So, we made a small model of the solar system!

We used one of the planet books, counted how many planets there were, and then traced out 10 circles (9 planets and 1 sun).  Now, I know there is some controversy about whether Pluto is a planet or not, but we went with it since the books both had Pluto as a planet.

Now, I wish we had watercolors for this next part, we seem to not have any in the house.  Which, if you ask me, is like a huge no-no when you have a three year old!  That's like not having any crayons!  Or cheese!

But unfortunately, we didn't have any.  So, we acrylic paints instead.  We turned to each planet's page in the book and talked about the colors of the planet and some of its features.  And then I let Marley paint them each the way she wanted to.  She actually really surprised me with how detailed she got on some of them.

The idea for the stars was to go outside and splatter the white paint onto a black piece of paper.  However, the roofers were still working on the house and we were not allowed to go outside.  So, we tried a few techniques inside and then finally discovered that we liked used the hard end of a paintbrush to put the stars on.  She did get a little crazy with the paint a few times, but it was easily covered by a planet.

The next step was to cut out the sun and planets and glue them on!  We did not put them in perfect order.  If we had made the planets smaller or had a larger piece of outer space paper, we may have been able to.  But I still think it works like this.  They don't need to be in the perfect order to learn about them.

Marley is so proud!  She loves it and it has been a lot of fun to talk about the planets and sun.  I love how much Marley adores learning!
